Triglycerides are fat molecules that circulate in the blood packaged mainly within very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) particles produced by the liver. When triglyceride production or clearance is imbalanced, blood levels rise, a condition called hypertriglyceridemia, which is associated with pancreatitis risk and contributes to cardiovascular disease. Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), are long-chain polyunsaturated fats that the liver can use in place of saturated fats as building blocks for lipid synthesis. Supplying purified or concentrated omega-3 fatty acids shifts hepatic lipid handling: less substrate is available for triglyceride assembly, several enzymes involved in triglyceride synthesis are less active, and fatty acid breakdown (oxidation) is favored over storage. The net effect is reduced secretion of triglyceride-rich VLDL particles from the liver and lower circulating triglyceride concentrations. This mechanism matters broadly in metabolic disease management, particularly for individuals with markedly elevated triglycerides who face elevated cardiovascular or pancreatic risk. Formulations differ in their fatty acid composition; using EPA in relatively pure form, rather than mixed with other omega-3 species, is intended to achieve triglyceride lowering while limiting effects on other lipid parameters that some omega-3 mixtures can produce.
