This mechanism describes a topical live biotherapeutic product (LBP): a formulation containing three defined bacterial strains applied directly to the skin to counteract Staphylococcus aureus, an opportunistic organism that overgrows on skin affected by atopic dermatitis (eczema). In healthy skin, a diverse community of commensal microorganisms limits colonization by pathogenic species through competition and biochemical interference. In atopic dermatitis, a compromised skin barrier and altered immune signaling allow S. aureus to dominate, and its growth and toxin production further inflame the skin and worsen barrier breakdown, creating a self-reinforcing cycle. Live biotherapeutics aim to interrupt this cycle by reintroducing beneficial bacteria that compete with S. aureus for nutrients and attachment sites, produce molecules that suppress its growth or virulence, and support a more balanced skin microbial ecosystem. Using a consortium of three complementary strains, rather than a single organism, is intended to provide broader and more durable coverage: different strains may occupy distinct ecological niches, produce different antimicrobial or immune-modulating compounds, and offer redundancy if one strain fails to establish.
