Head-to-head evidence
Fosamprenavir vs Tipranavir
Same mechanism, same race: design-graded trial evidence for both assets, with the grading rationale shown. Grades describe the quality of the evidence, never the merits of either security.

Fosamprenavir · Lexiva / Telzir
Marketed by ViiV Healthcare
NCT00296504 · Phase 3 · completed
This is an open-label, single-arm roll-over/extension study (APV30005) that continued fosamprenavir treatment in HIV patients who had completed earlier randomized trials (APV30001, APV30002, APV30003). No randomization, blinding, or control group was used, and the primary outcomes were descriptive safety and laboratory measures rather than a comparative efficacy endpoint. The extension design and lack of a comparator mean the results provide supportive long-term safety information but not comparative efficacy evidence.
Tipranavir · Aptivus
Marketed by Boehringer Ingelheim
NCT00144170 · Phase 3 · completed
The trial randomized participants to an active comparator and included 882 enrolled participants, with 863 in the reported efficacy denominators, but the registry does not clearly report masking. Both primary virologic endpoints favored tipranavir with statistically significant comparisons; however, the primary outcomes were virologic surrogate measures rather than hard clinical outcomes, so the evidence is rated moderate.
