Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent cells, originally isolated from bone marrow but obtainable from tissues such as adipose (fat) or umbilical cord, that can be expanded in culture and administered as a cell therapy rather than a conventional drug. Their therapeutic rationale rests less on their once-hoped-for ability to replace damaged tissue directly and more on their secretory and immune-modulating behavior: infused MSCs release a broad mixture of growth factors, cytokines, and vesicles that can dampen excessive inflammation, encourage blood vessel formation, and support the survival of stressed or injured cells nearby. Preparations differ in source (bone marrow, adipose, umbilical cord) and in whether cells come from the patient (autologous) or a donor (allogeneic); allogeneic products offer manufacturing consistency and off-the-shelf availability, while autologous products avoid donor-related immune concerns but require patient-specific processing. Because of this paracrine, immune-regulating action, MSC therapies are studied broadly across conditions involving tissue injury, chronic inflammation, or degeneration, including cardiac disease, immune and inflammatory disorders, and neurodegenerative or orthopedic conditions, wherever modulating the local injury environment might improve healing or reduce damage without directly regenerating an organ.
