Head-to-head evidence

peginterferon beta-1a vs Rebif (interferon beta 1a)

Same mechanism, same race: design-graded trial evidence for both assets, with the grading rationale shown. Grades describe the quality of the evidence, never the merits of either security.

Reliable signal

NCT00906399 · Phase 3 · completed

This was a large, randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled trial with 1,516 participants. Its primary clinical endpoint, annualized relapse rate at one year, was statistically significantly lower with both peginterferon beta-1a schedules than with placebo (p=0.0007 for every 2 weeks and p=0.0114 for every 4 weeks).

Rebif (interferon beta 1a)

Marketed by Merck KGaA and partners

Approved in Multiple Sclerosisbiologic (interferon)
Weak signal

NCT00110396 · Phase 3 · completed

The study was a single-group, open-label trial without randomization or a placebo or active comparator. Its primary endpoint was a laboratory antibody measure rather than a clinical outcome; 45 of 259 assessed participants were neutralising-antibody positive at week 96, but the design did not provide a controlled comparison.
