Head-to-head evidence
belapectin vs GR-MD-02
Same mechanism, same race: design-graded trial evidence for both assets, with the grading rationale shown. Grades describe the quality of the evidence, never the merits of either security.

belapectin
Developed by Galectin Therapeutics Inc.
NCT04365868 · Phase 2/3 · terminated
This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial that measured a real clinical marker of disease progression, new esophageal varices, and numerically fewer patients developed varices on belapectin than on placebo. However, the registry record does not include a statistical significance test for this difference, and the gap between arms was not large enough to be judged as a positive result on its own, so whether belapectin truly worked remains unresolved.
GR-MD-02
Developed by Galectin Therapeutics Inc.
NCT02421094 · Phase 2 · completed
The trial was randomized, quadruple-blind, and placebo-controlled, but included only 30 participants. Its primary endpoint was a surrogate MRI biomarker rather than a clinical or endoscopic outcome, and the comparison was not statistically significant (p=0.1621), so the findings provide limited evidence of benefit.
